60-second interview with…
Rosemary Marr TEP, Chair of the STEP Professional
Development Committee and Senior Trust Director at Nedgroup Trust
Limited, Jersey
When and why did you become a STEP
member?
In 1992, I was invited by Peter Pexton to
become Founder Member of the Jersey branch.
What does being a STEP member mean to
you/your organisation?
Access to a formal and focused
education programme and relevant continuing professional
development. It is important for our clients and our business that
all of us are informed and up-to-date with the latest
developments.
What's been the best STEP event you've
attended and why?
The first Private Client Awards held
in London in 2006. This was the first time STEP had attempted
something as big as this. The event highlights excellence across
the Private Wealth Sector. The judges are genuinely independent and
are supported by a college of experts across STEP. That first
event, eight years ago, was an outstanding success and continues to
go from strength to strength each year.
What is your role in your
Committee?
I am Chair of the STEP Professional
Development Committee.
What are the main challenges facing
your Committee/practitioners at the moment?
Many challenges face us, but if I was to pick
one I would say the biggest challenge is the provision of
an appropriate education programme
as a route to membership, to the ever-increasing number of
jurisdictions where STEP has a presence, whilst maintaining the
high standards which is our benchmark.
How will you deal with
these?
Working with the Professional Development Team
headed by Nigel Race and our training partner, Central Law
Training, on a case-by-case basis, offering a tailor-made version
of the International Diploma where appropriate, and in other cases
working with the branches on bespoke alternatives.
What's been your career
highlight?
Difficult to say but on balance I
would say it is my present job working with a fantastic (mainly
STEP qualified) team dedicated to providing a first-class service
to our clients.
What do you do in your spare
time?
What spare time? Seriously though, I
am interested in politics and history.
What's the best book you have read
this year?
The Hit, by David Baldacci.
What's your favourite
quote?
Henry Ford: ‘A business absolutely devoted to
service will have only one worry about profits. They will be
embarrassingly large.’
Rosemary Marr TEP, Chair of the STEP
Professional Development Committee, and Senior Trust Director,
Nedgroup Trust Limited, Jersey, is also past STEP Chair as well as
STEP Vice-President. Rosemary is a member of the STEP Journal
Editorial Board and a Treasurer at STEP Jersey branch.
