Luxembourg

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, covering 2,587 square km, lies in the heart of Western Europe and borders Belgium, France and Germany.

Luxembourg, an independent sovereign state with a constitutional monarchy, is a founder member of the EU, which has several institutions located in Luxembourg. Approximately 220 international banks have been established in the Grand Duchy. Numerous investment funds have made Luxembourg their legal base.

1. Introduction

a. History and background

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, covering 2,587 square km, lies in the heart of Western Europe and borders Belgium, France and Germany.

Luxembourg, an independent sovereign state with a constitutional monarchy, is a founder member of the EU, which has several institutions located in Luxembourg. Approximately 220 international banks have been established in the Grand Duchy. Numerous investment funds have made Luxembourg their legal base.

The population is approximately 480,000, of which 40 per cent are non-Luxembourg nationals. Most people speak Luxembourgish, with French and German as the main languages for administrative purposes. English is widely used as a business language.

The currency is the euro (EUR).

b. Legal system

Luxembourg has its own legal system, based on Roman law.
