60-second interview with…

Ivan Hooper TEP, STEP member since 2007

Why did you join STEP?

For the resources, educational and networking opportunities that being part of a professional body directly related to my industry would bring.

What does being a member mean to you/your organisation?

STEP provides so much value through its resources: the Journal, the supplements, the email updates and keeping us updated on current events in our industry. Plus there’s training and education on the subjects that relate to my day to day work. Most importantly, its members provide for a very strong, useful community and platform of information and friendship.

How does being part of a branch enhance your membership experience?

It provides local resources and networking opportunities.

What’s been the best STEP event you’ve attended and why?

The STEP LatAm Conference 2011 in Panama, the inaugural LatAm conference. It was a fantastic sold-out event. The combination of common law and civil law addressed to and focused on LatAm was a perfect match for me.

What are the main challenges facing your organisation/practitioners at the moment?

Changes in legislation and regulation – FATCA.

How will you deal with these challenges?

Planning, moving ahead with change, adapting and finding new opportunities to develop new business lines.

What else is keeping you busy at work at the moment?

Personnel management.

What’s been your career highlight?

I was recently appointed CEO of the family business.

Who has been your greatest mentor and why?

Geoffrey Hooper, my Father, for his vision, passion and dedication.

What do you do in your spare time?

Enjoy my family, every four years the Rugby World Cup and, when possible, a round of golf.

What’s the best book you have read this year?

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves.

What’s your favourite quote?

‘Daddy, you can do it!’ (My three-year-old son, Alec)

Which social media channels do you use and why?

LinkedIn – I think it’s one of the best tools for professional networking.
